Purple Line Construction Updates

Campus Drive/Regents Drive Intersection Closed – 3.20.23-3.24.23

From Monday, March 20 through Friday, March 24,2023, the Purple Line project will close the Regents Drive/Campus Drive intersection for repaving. Westbound Campus Drive traffic from Baltimore Avenue will be detoured at Paint Branch Drive. No through traffic will be allowed on northbound or southbound Regents Drive past Campus Drive. See the traffic detour plan in the attached map. Use caution when traveling around campus and watch for shifting construction activity and detour signs.

Heavy Demolition from Regents Drive to Cole Fieldhouse – 3.1.23-3.15.23

Starting on or about Wednesday, March 1 2023, the Purple Line project will perform heavy demolition along Campus Drive from Regents Drive to Cole Fieldhouse. This operation will require loud demolition equipment between the hours from 5pm to 8pm for approximately 2 weeks.

Campus Drive/Regents Drive Intersection Closed – 1.17.23-1.18.23

Starting on or about Tuesday night, January 17 from 10:30 p.m. to  6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, January 18, the Purple Line project will close Campus Drive for construction at the Regents Drive intersection. Westbound traffic from Baltimore Avenue will be detoured at Paint Branch Drive. No thru traffic will be allowed on Regents Drive past Campus Drive. See attached map for detour route around campus during this work.

Long-Term Traffic Shift in Campus Core – 12.27.22

Starting on or about Tuesday, December 27, 2022 with an expected completion date of Wednesday, December 28, 2022, the Purple Line project will close various roads on campus to install a major traffic pattern through the core of campus. See the attached traffic detour plan. 

See the following details of those closures: 

  • Campus Drive will be closed from Paint Branch Drive to Union Drive 
  • Union Drive will be closed from Campus Drive to Championship Lane
  • Regents Drive will be closed at the traffic circle

The new traffic pattern will be in place long-term. See the attached maps for the pedestrian detour routes and the following changes:

  • The work zone along Presidential Drive, Lot 1d and Lot 1f will expand. Access to Ehrensberger Drive from Presidential Drive will be closed.
  • Campus Drive in the core of campus will remain one way westbound; however, Union Drive will be closed from Alumni Drive to the Benjamin Building. All traffic on Campus Drive must turn left at the Benjamin Building.
  • The existing traffic circle at Regents Drive and Campus Drive will be reconfigured to a 3 way stop intersection.
  • A work zone between Lot C1, Visitor Lot and Reckord Armory will be established.
  • Rossborough Lane will reopen from Baltimore Avenue to Diamondback drive and will be closed from Diamondback Drive to the service parking lot near the Leonardtown Office Building.

Use caution when traveling around campus and watch for shifting construction activity and detour signs.

Campus Drive Lane and Sidewalk Closure – 12.5.22

Starting on or about Monday, 12/5, the Purple Line project will close the eastbound lane and a portion of the sidewalk on Campus Drive at Presidential Drive for utility construction. The construction will take about 3 days. See attached map for work area and pedestrian detour route. Watch for flaggers, detour signs and construction activity.

Baltimore Avenue Utility Investigation – 12.5.22

Starting on or about Monday, December 5, 2022, the Purple Line project will close a lane on Baltimore Avenue and a portion of the sidewalk for utility investigation. The sidewalk south of Rossborough Lane in front of Ritchie Coliseum will be closed for about 2 hours. The bus stop will remain open. See attached map for the work area and detour route. Watch for shifting traffic, detour signs, and construction activity.

Campus Drive, Rossborough Lane Sidewalk Closure – 11.21.22

Starting on or about Monday, November 21, 2022, the Purple Line project will close the sidewalk along Campus Drive from where the roadway is adjacent to Rossborough Lane to the Paint Branch Building (across from MFRI) and provide a detour route for pedestrians traveling through the area. See the attached map for the work area and the pedestrian detour route. Watch for detour signs and shifting construction activity.

Utility Construction at Baltimore Ave and Rossborough Lane Intersection – 10.9.22 - 11.8.22

On or about Sunday, October 9. 2022, the Purple Line project will be performing overnight utility construction on Baltimore Avenue at the Rossborough Lane intersection. The Baltimore Avenue crosswalk at Rossborough Lane will be closed and pedestrians will need to cross at Fraternity Row or Hotel Drive. The nightly closures will occur from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday for approximately 8 weeks. See the attached map for the pedestrian detour route. Watch for detour signs and shifting construction activity.

Sidewalk Closure on Campus Drive – 9.12.22 - 9.13.22

Starting on or about Monday, September 12, 2022, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction on the south side of Campus Drive between HJ Patterson and Edward St. John Learning & Teaching Center. A portion of the sidewalk will be closed and the work is expected to take 1 day. See the attached map for the work area and the pedestrian detour route. Watch for detour signs and shifting construction activity.  

Steam Outage Multiple Buildings – 8.26.22 - 8.28.22 (to 9.9.22 for Nyumburu)

Purple Line Construction will be performing work that will cause steam outages in multiple buildings starting at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2022, through 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2022. This will impact all steam in the building (steam-fired equipment) and possibly make the temperature seem cooler than normal. Domestic hot water and heating hot water will experience a drop in temperature. Humidification will be impacted as well. In H.J. Patterson there is a soil drier that will be unavailable.Loud noises can be expected throughout the outage.

  • Biology-Psychology Building (all steam-fired equipment and hot water service will be impacted)
  • Bioscience Research Building (all steam-fired equipment and hot water service will be impacted)
  • Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center
  • H.J. Patterson Hall
  • Health Center
  • Hornbake Library
  • Jimenez Hall
  • Nyumburu Cultural Center (outage will extend to Friday, September 9 at 4 p.m.)
  • Plant Sciences Building
  • Symons Hall

Steam Fluctuations Microbiology Building – 8.24.22 - 9.23.22

The Purple Line project will be performing construction that will cause fluctuations in steam service for the Microbiology Building from 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, through 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2022. The work will require the steam service to be switched over to a temporary boiler which may cause fluctuations in the steam pressure. No outages are anticipated during the work. The estimated schedule is below. 

  • 8/23 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM - Steam is available. Crews will be testing the boiler. Noise is expected in the loading dock area.
  • 8/24 6:00 AM - 9:00 AM - Steam pressure fluctuations are possible during the transition to the temporary boiler. No significant impact is anticipated.
  • 8/24 6:00 AM - 9/23 Noon - Microbiology is supported by the temporary boiler. Expect noise from the boiler.
  • 9/23 Noon - 3:00 PM - Steam pressure fluctuations possible during transition to normal steam service. No significant impact is anticipated.  
  • 9/23-9/25 - Crews demobilize the temporary boiler. 

Campus Drive Pavement Marking – 8.23.22

On or about Tuesday, August 23, the Purple Line project will paint pavement markings on Campus Drive from Union Drive to Regents Drive starting at 6:00 am. Traffic will be stopped intermittently for a maximum duration of 5 minutes at a time. Avoid the area if possible. Watch for construction traffic and expect delays during peak traffic periods. This work will take approximately 1 day, pending weather conditions.

Rossborough Lane Sidewalk Closure – 8.17.22 - 9.16.22

Starting on or about Wednesday, August 17, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction along the south side of Rossborough Lane and close a portion of the sidewalk. The work is expected to last approximately 4 weeks. See the attached map for the work area and the pedestrian detour route. Watch for detour signs and shifting construction activity.

Traffic Delays Campus Drive – 8.15.22 - 8.18.22

On or about Monday, August 15, 2022, the Purple Line project will install concrete traffic barriers along Campus Drive from Union Drive to Regents Drive, including the traffic circle. Watch for construction traffic and expect delays during peak traffic periods. This work will take approximately 3 days, pending weather conditions.

Campus Drive Road Closure – 8.10.22 - 8.13.22

Starting or about Wednesday evening, August 10, 2022, the Purple Line project will repave Campus Drive overnight from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The paving operation will take approximately 4 nights. See the attached map for work zone and the vehicle detour route. Watch for detour signs and construction activity.

Sidewalk Closures Campus Drive and Union Lane Intersection – 8.3.22 - 8.10.22

Starting on or about Wednesday, August 3, 2022, the Purple Line Project will repair sidewalks at the intersection of Campus Drive and Union Lane. See the attached map for the work area and pedestrian detour. The work will take approximately 1 week. Expect loud noise during some of the work. Access to St. Mary’s Hall will be maintained at all times. Watch for shifting construction activity. 

Lane Closures on Rossborough Lane – 8.1.22 - 8.6.22

Starting on or about Monday, August 1, 2022, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction along Rossborough Lane near the Leonardtown Community. See the attached map for the work area. This work will take approximately 1 week. One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times and the entire road will be open at the end of each workday. Watch for flaggers and shifting construction activity.

Water Service Outage MFRI, Paint Branch Buildings – 7.29.22 - 7.30.22

The Purple Line project will be performing utility work that requires a water service outage from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 2022, through 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022. This is expected to impact the following buildings: 

  • MFRI Office/Classroom Building (199)  
  • Paint Branch Building (383)

During the outage, the domestic cold water (toilets, sinks, etc.), domestic hot water (showers, sinks, etc.), drinking water, and sprinklers in the buildings listed above will be shut off and service will be unavailable.

Road Closure Rossborough Lane – 7.20.22 - 10.22.22

Starting on or about Wednesday, July 20, 2022, the Purple Line project will close a portion of Rossborough Lane near Diamondback Drive for utility construction. The work will take approximately 13 weeks.  See attached maps for work zone phases and detours. Watch for detour signs, flagging, and shifting construction activity. This work has been delayed from the original scheduled start date in April.

Domestic Water Outage Multiple Buildings – 6.24.22 - 6.25.22

The Purple Line project will be performing utility work that requires a domestic water outage from Friday, June 24, 2022 at 8 p.m. to Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 6 a.m. in the following buildings: Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr., Thomas V. Miller Jr. Administration Building, Reckord Armory, Rossborough Inn, School of Public Policy Building, and Turner Hall. The domestic cold water (toilets, sinks, etc.) and domestic hot water (showers, sinks, etc.) will be off during this time. Along with the domestic water being off, you can expect loud noise. 

Utility Construction Campus Drive, Nyumburu Amphitheater – 6.13.22 - 8.26.22

Starting on or about Monday, June 13, 2022, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction from Campus Drive to Nyumburu Amphitheater in 3 phases. See the attached maps for the work areas and durations of the phases. Watch for detour signs and shifting construction activity.

Road Closure Diamondback Drive – 6.7.22 - 6.9.22, 6.15.22 - 6.16.22, 6.30.22 - 7.1.22

A portion of Diamondback Drive will be closed for Purple Line construction during the dates indicated above. Service vehicles will be allowed through upon request under the direction of construction personnel. See the attached map for the work area and detour. Watch for detour signs and shifting construction activity.

Electrical Outages Dorchester, Health Center, Jimenez, St. Mary's – 5.25.22 - 5.26.22

Wednesday, May 25 through Thursday, May 26, the Purple Line project will be performing utility work that requires electrical power outages during the early morning hours at Dorchester Hall, the Health Center, Jimenez Hall, and St. Mary’s Hall. The time and buildings impacted by each outage are listed below.

  • Wednesday 5/25, 4 am - 6:30 am – Dorchester Hall, Health Center, Jimenez Hall, St. Mary's Hall 
  • Thursday 5/26, 4 am - 6:30 am – Health Center, Jimenez Hall

Baltimore Ave. Lane Closure – 4.25.22 - 5.31.22

Starting on or about Monday, April 25, 2022, the Purple Line project will close a portion of southbound lane along Baltimore Avenue at Rossborough Lane for utility construction. The lane will be reopened at the end of each work day. The sidewalk adjacent to Baltimore Avenue in front of Rossborough Inn will also be closed. This work is expected to be completed by May 31, 2022.  See attached map for the work area and pedestrian detour. Watch for detour signs, flagging, and shifting construction activity.

Domestic Water Outages Multiple Buildings – 4.25.22 - 4.28.22

A domestic water outage will be performed at Bio/Psych, Bioscience Research, JH Patterson, Hornbake Library & Microbiology from 9:00 p.m. on Monday, April 25th, 2022, through 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26th, 2022. The following systems and services throughout the listed buildings will be affected: fire protection water, lab cold water, lab hot water, domestic cold water (toilets, sinks, etc.), domestic hot water (showers, sinks, etc.), and drinking water.

A domestic water outage will be performed from 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26th, 2022, thru 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27th, 2022 at the following buildings: Geology Building, Edward St. John Learning & Teaching Center, and Symons Hall. The following systems and services throughout the above-listed buildings will be affected: laboratory compressed air, lab cold water, lab hot water, domestic cold water (toilets, sinks, etc.), domestic hot water (showers, sinks, etc.), drinking water, and sprinklers. 

A domestic water outage will be performed 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27th, 2022, thru 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 28th, 2022 at the following buildings: Jimenez Hall, H.J. Patterson Hall, St. Mary's Hall, Dorchester Hall, Health Center, and Stamp Student Union. The following systems and services throughout the above-listed buildings will be affected: laboratory compressed air, lab cold water, lab hot water, domestic cold water (toilets, sinks, etc.), domestic hot water (showers, sinks, etc.), drinking water, and sprinklers. 

Electrical Outage Turner Hall, Rossborough Inn, Carriage House – 4.23.22 - 5.5.22

Saturday, April 23 through Thursday, May 5, the Purple Line project will be performing utility work that requires an electrical power outage at Turner Hall, Rossborough Inn, and Carriage House. Generators will be provided to supply temporary power to the buildings during the following dates and times.

  • Monday 4/25 to Friday 4/29: 6:30 am to 7 pm
  • Saturday 4/30: 4 am to 7 pm (Turner Hall only)
  • Monday 5/2 to Wednesday 5/4: 6:30 am to 6:30 pm

Normal power will be restored to the buildings by 6:30 am on Thursday 5/5.

Electrical Outage Turner Hall, Rossborough Inn – 4.11.22

Facilities Management Purple Line will be performing an electrical outage on Monday, April 11, 2022, from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. This outage will affect Rossborough Inn and Turner Hall.

Electrical Outage Turner Hall, Rossborough Inn, Carriage House – 3.31.22

The Purple Line will be performing an electric outage on Thursday, March 31, 2022, 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. that will affect Turner Hall, Rossborough Inn, and the Carriage House. During this time there will be no power to these buildings.

Rossborough Lane Sidewalk, Lane Closures – 3.11.22 - 7.11.22

Starting on or about Friday, March 11, the Purple Line project will close sidewalks by Rossborough Inn for utility construction. See the attached map for the work area and pedestrian detour route. A protected walkway along Rossborough Lane and one lane of traffic will be maintained for vehicles in each direction at all times. This work will take approximately 4 months. Watch for flaggers and shifting construction activity.

Kehoe Track Electrical Outage – 2.28.22 - 3.2.22

Starting on or about Monday, February 28, 2022, through Wednesday, March 2, 2022, 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. each day the Purple Line project will perform utility work requiring an electrical shutdown for Kehoe Track at Ludwig Field, UMGC/Marriott Garage, UMGC Administration Building. This will impact the normal power (most power outlets will be off, unless on a designated emergency power circuit. 

Lane Closure Rossborough Lane Near Diamondback Drive – 2.21.22 - 3.7.22

Starting on or about Monday, February 21, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction on Rossborough Lane near Diamondback Drive. One lane of traffic will be maintained around the work zone. See the attached map. The work will last approximately 2 weeks. Watch for flaggers and shifting construction activity. 

Lane Closure Union Drive – 2.17.22 - 2.18.22

Starting on or about Thursday, February 17, 2022 through Friday, February 18, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction in Union Drive between Knight Hall and Benjamin Building. See the attached map for the work area.  One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times and the entire road will be reopened at the end of each workday. Please watch for flaggers and shifting construction activity.

Campus Drive Near Hornbake Plaza – 2.16.22 - 2.23.22

Starting on or about Wednesday, February 16, 2022, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction on Campus Drive in front of Hornbake Plaza. The work will start on the south side of Campus Drive and then shift to the north. See the attached map for the work areas and pedestrian detour routes. The work will last approximately 1 week. Please watch for detour signs and shifting construction activity. 

Rossborough Lane – 2.8.22 - 3.1.22

Starting on or about Tuesday, February 8th, 2022, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction at Rossborough Lane by Leonardtown Community. See the attached map for the work area. This work will take approximately 3 weeks. One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times and the entire road will be open at the end of each work day. Watch for detour signs and shifting construction activity.

Campus Drive and Union Lane Intersection – 2.2.22 - 2.6.22

Starting on or about Wednesday, February 2, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction at the intersection of Union Lane and Campus Drive in 3 phases. See attached maps for the work areas and durations of the phases. Union Lane and Union Lane Garage will be closed on Saturday, 2/5, and Sunday, 2/6. Watch for detour signs and shifting construction activity.

Lane Closure Union Drive – 2.2.22 - 2.7.22

Starting on or about Wednesday, February 2, 2022, 7:00 a.m. the Purple Line project will perform utility construction in Union Drive between Knight Hall and Benjamin Building. See the attached map for the work area.  One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times and the entire road will be reopened at the end of each workday. The work will last approximately 4 days. Please watch for flaggers and shifting construction activity.

Lane Closure Near Turner Hall – 1.31.22 - 2.11.22

Starting on or about Monday, January 31, 2022, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction in the roadway between Turner Hall and Reckord Armory. See the attached map for the work area. One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times and the entire road will be reopened at the end of each work day. The work will last approximately 3 weeks. Please watch for flaggers and shifting construction activity. 

Flagging Rossborough Lane – 1.24.22 - 2.7.22

Starting on or about Monday, January 24, the Purple Line project will perform utility construction in Rossborough Lane east of Baltimore Avenue. See the attached map for the work area. One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times and the entire road will be reopened at the end of each work day. The work will last approximately 2 weeks. Watch for flaggers and shifting construction activity.  

Sidewalk Closure, Stamp Student Union – 1.10.22 - 1.22.22

Starting on or about Monday, January 10, 2022, the Purple Line project will close portions of the sidewalks along the north side of Campus Drive near the Stamp and Microbiology Building for utility installation. See the attached maps for phasing and pedestrian detours. The work will last approximately 2 weeks. Watch for shifting construction activity and detour signs.
