Frederick Douglass Square

The Frederick Douglass Square, located on the University’s Hornbake Plaza, was recently unveiled to commemorate Douglass’ roots in Maryland and his advocacy for racial justice, human rights, and education. A bronze statue of Douglass commands the center of the Square, and his powerful words can be read on a wall bordering the Square, as well as on tiles on the ground. The University of Maryland, the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture, the Maryland Historical Trust, and private donations funded the $575,000 project.
